Nine University of Melbourne students have stripped off for a cheeky stunt to deliver a serious message to campus administrators about investing in coal, oil and gas companies.

The students bared all at the Old Quadrangle in the centre of the Parkville Campus on Tuesday morning as part of a week-long campaign involving university students around Australia.

Organiser Anastasia Gramatakos said she had seen documents which proved the University of Melbourne was investing in fossil fuel-producing companies.

"The university does have money in the fossil fuel industry," Ms Gramatakos said.

"Two years ago they said no they would not divest, since then they've revoked that.

"There's no transparent process around where their money is or isn't."

The university grows its money using the Victorian Funds Management Corporation (VFMC), whose clients include a number of other public sector organisations.
