Because at some point in time they need to decide on a direction to head in. Can't sign 1 year deals forever. Especially overpaying dudes like Hill. Etc
Unfortunately the Lakers have painted themselves into a corner that I don't see them getting out of for the next 3-5 years. They've put themselves into the position where only a big name free agent will turn them into a legitimate team instead of being the missing piece on a contender.
There should have been a smooth transition from the contending years until now. Expect 1 year contracts for the next couple years because the team has tunnel vision when it comes to free agents.

He's had stretches over the years where he will stop shooting and try to pad assist stats, but he has never proved that he can sustain that kind of play style. He needs the ball in his hands constantly to have any positive effect in a game, which is why he would be terrible on a team like the Spurs.
