Who was the better defender? What would happen if you placed Thurmond on the Celtics instead of Russell? And Finally, just for shits and giggles...How do you think a team comprised of these 2 would effect a peak Shaq double teaming him? Thurmond best known for his 1 on 1 defense, and Russell help defense (If Im not mistaken. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!!)

Don't know about Shaq , it's changes with rules and dynamics of the era .
But Russell was the greatest defender ( his effect was on all five players , Thurmond was more like one on one defensive beast ) . But Thurmond and Ben Wallace closest two players to Russell , defensively .
Thurmond was greatest man to man defender , great rim protector . But plus , Russell had Wallace/Pippen/Hakeem type help defence . Which is determines Russell as greatest defensive force .
