They will suck for years whether Dwight resigns or not.
If Dwight comes back: They will be way over the luxury tax, so they cannot get anyone. Everyone gets older, Nash and Gasol. Even if Dwight recovers and looks great on defense again, Kobe will still be out half the season...and let's not forget the lack of chemistry they had which resulted in them losing (that won't go away). They will be worst than the previous year.
If Dwight leaves: Yay cap space except Kobe still is on his last year getting paid 30 mil. They're not the only team with cap space, see Mavs. B-b-but they're the Lakers, they will get anyone they want..even lebrawn. lol With Kobe out half the season, who wants to come here and take all the crap from fairweather fans? This team is OLD with a bunch of overpaid players. Enjoy rebuilding for the next 3-5 years.
It's the winning culture. Not all Laker fans are deluded, just the kids and fair weather fans. If Dwight stays, we get Dwight. Yes we are over the cap and yes Kobe is injured, but Mitch may be able to swing a trade. He turned Derek Fisher into Jordan Hill and Ramon Sessions. I'm still kind of salty Sessions left to sit on the Bobcats bench.
If Dwight leaves, the Lakers will suck as Gasol and Nash will be a year older, Kobe will be injured and the bench will still suck. But we have our own 1st rounder this year, so we could get a lottery pick or even a top 5 if we are bad enough.
Whether or not Dwight stays, if the rest of the roster remains the same, we'll have at least $20m cap space. John Wall, D-Wade, LeBron, Paul George, Melo, Bosh and DeMarcus Cousins are all able to sign outright. Kyrie Irving has a team option (which the Cavs will obviously pick up), and Kobe and Pau can also be re-signed.
