its a fair equivalent, i would even say this year there's a strong case for 1st round in the west being equivalent to making the NBA Finals in the east

Honestly Jabbar, you just gave me some perspective with that comment and now I respekt Dwight even more. Not many players have the balls (see: LeBron) to play in a tough conference like the West and instead are content with piling up their asterisk rings and asterisk FMVPs while colluding with other players to keep their teams as stacked as possible. Props to Dwight for refusing to take the easy route.
