MJ's midrange percentage is pretty interesting. Especially since most of them were probably turnaround fadeaway jumpers.

NBA.com defines "midrange" as shots inside 3-point line but outside paint:
"Non-Measured - a certain percentage (around 8%) of shots did not get measured.
Close Shots - the smorgasboard of close-in action, including dunks, layups, tips, etc.
6 to 11 feet - what we are referring to as Short Two's
12 to 17 feet - perhaps the true mid-range shot distance
18 to the three point line - aka Long Two's

Overall midrange % ( all shots inside the 3-point line but outside the paint)
JORDAN 1997:. 49.3%, 1202 fga
CURRY.. 2015:. 41.1%, 285 fga
CURRY.. 2016:. 45.0%, 160 fga
LEBRON 2015:. 37.0%, 343 fga
LEBRON 2016:. 37.1%, 251 fga
If you're counting all shots inside the 3pt line as mid-range ....then that favors MJ in 1997 since the NBA was still using the shorter 3pt line.

Jordan's advantage in efficiency and volume on 2-point jumpshots is so severe, that the 1 foot makes no difference.
But regardless, Jordan shot far better than Curry on jumpshots inside 20 feet, on FIVE times the volume:
......................MJ 1997...................Curry 2015............ Curry 2016 <--- links to nba.com data

8-16 ft......... 51.8%, 682 fga........... 30.7%, 163 fga........ 34.8%, 153 fga
15-19 ft....... 49.5%, 594 fga........... 40.4%, 213 fga........ 41.9%, 136 fga
Anyway you slice it, Jordan was FAR better at 2-point jumpshooting than both Curry and Lebron...
And MJ wouldn't even NEED to be a good shooter in today's game - Lebron, Westbrook, Jimmy Butler, and Derozan have poor 3-point AND midrange efficiency, but they're still the NBA's best scorers because the wide open spacing and hands-off defense allows athletic players to get to the rim easier than ever before.
Today's open game would benefit MJ's athleticism the same way - but he would ALSO have goat midrange efficiency, and therefore a massive advantage over his aforementioned, non-shooting peers.

I wonder what Jerry West did in the mid range. The dude shot a very high% in a faster pace type of play.

Will Curry guard Lebron in the Finals?. Otherwise, he's nowhere near MJ.
Jordan's GOAT two-way performance included being the primary defender on Magic - MJ guarded him for 14 of 20 quarters, which included holding Magic to 0-0-0 with 1 TO in critical Game 3 OT, shown here.. (btw, Pippen missed that OT by fouling out - classic Pippen - MIA in the critical moments of the series).
The 1991 matchup was one of the best ever because it showcased the regular season MVP (Jordan) vs. the runner-up (Magic), and both guys were top 5 all-time players.. But MJ dominated the matchup - here's their overall stats for the series:
JORDAN 1991 FINALS:. 33/7/11 on 56%
MAGIC.. 1991 FINALS:. 19/7/13 on 43%
Obviously, MJ's defensive impact dwarfs Curry's - this is especially true against teams that have great perimeter players, since MJ can guard guys like Magic, Lebron, or Drexler, while Curry can only defend guys like Shumpert, Delly, etc.
There's a reason Curry didn't win FMVP in last year's Finals - he only did half the job, while Iggy did the other half (defense).
Otoh, MJ performed Iggy's duties on defense by guarding Magic/Drexler, while still having a goat offensive impact - Jordan's 2-way ability is why he has 6 FMVP's, compared to Curry's 0.
DEFENSIVE ASSIGNMENTS BY QUARTER, 1991 FINALS:
Pippen guarded Magic for:
GAME 1: none
GAME 2: 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters
GAME 3: 2nd and 3rd quarters
GAME 4: the last 4 minutes of 4th quarter
GAME 5: none

Game 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCNFQSBUe5c
