How awesome has that been? When Cavs traded for JR he used to be a typical 6th man type of player for instant offense off the bench and a lot of dumb shots taken. The plan was to start Shumpert at the 2 and get JR to play off the bench.

Now though he has developed into this super 3&D player who spaces the floor and plays great defense, actually one of the best defenders the Cavs have.
Currently he has to be one of the best 3&D guards in the league.

Just all around great job from the Cavs coaching staff, his teammates and obviously himself.

JR is a rhythmn player and moody. Him as a bench player is jekyll and hyde. He needs touches to remain engaged in the game.

I feel like Blatt tried to make him just a 3 point shooter while Lue actually lets him ISO a couple of times a half. Live with 3-4 bad shots to get great energy out of him.

you're right, but Blatt let him ISO too. He's been doing it for the whole season now. You can't give Lue the credit for this. That wouldn't be fair to Blatt. It was Blatt who supported J.R. the most imo.

The problem with J.R. is that it's hard to leave him on the floor during the crunch time. He makes critical mistakes when it matters the most. He's cost (or almost cost) them several games. And then of course he turns nuts at times and punches people etc.

JR and Kyrie play extremely well off of one another. JR actually started this season in a shooting slump. In his first 20 games this year, all before Irving came back, here were his averages:

37.8% FG
35.7% 3Pt
54.5% FT

In the 28 games since Kyrie came back:

14.2 points
43.5% FG
42.7% 3Pt
63.3% FT

There is only so far the defense can bend and JR has been the big winner so far.

He doesn't get to the line much, only averaging a little over one attempt per game (around 50 total this year). I am sure that is a big reason why his percentage is so surprisingly low. If you only get to the line a few times a week, it is hard to get a good rhythm going.

Still, there is no great reason for that kind of a shooter to be under 60% at the free throw line. No excuse for it.

JR has always been a surprisingly poor FT shooter. Think he's been around 70 after his first few years in the NBA. Maybe he needs to go Van Exel and take a step back.
