Default Did Boston try to sign a top free agent?

    Like Melo or Dwight?

It seems like they were obsessed with rebuilding, but what was wrong with their core of Rondo, Jeff Green, Bradley, Sullinger?

I understand why teams like Milwaukee constantly have to blow up and rebuild, but surely Boston isn't an undesirable city for free agents, especially with all that history.

    1. Boston is a cold ass city, and not as popular as NY

    2. That core is laughable, the only All Star there is Rondo

Cos Bradley/Sullinger/Olynk/ were not ready to carry the front court to a Championship

Cos Rondo was always going to leave no matter who or what they signed?

Cos they have more draft picks then Lou Williams has girlfriends in the next 5 years and see that as the building of the side and not Melo on 25 mill a year.

In the salary cap/max era? I don't think they've even had the space to offer someone the max. Edit: Not sure about this but like JSic said there has never been a superstar FA signed from someone else with the max.

Rondo is the only star and he's not a scorer. To keep him they'd have had to max him.

It's not a city like LA or NY that players badly want to live in and play for. The Celtic history is something fans can be proud of but FAs don't care about. Players are more interested in their own legacies than a team's past glory. The Cs can keep stars that they draft (like Pierce) so they have an edge over a place like Toronto but we'll never have something happen here like what the Heat got with James and Bosh.

Boston carry a misconception that they have the allure of an LA, New York or even a Florida esque market. The legacy of the Celtics is there, but the city itself doesn't attract free agents. All of their big moves (in the modern era at least) have come through trades, not outright signings. There's no precedent for a big name Free Agent saying "I'm going to Boston".

I think they're trying to build depth so that when a free agent comes, they'd be instant contender. Rondo isn't gonna cut it.

Right now they seem to have a pretty bright future with the core of Smart/Bradley/Sullinger/Olynyk/Zeller/Green/Wright. That's a very deep team. In a couple of years maybe Durant decides to go there or they get a star SF through the draft.
