Is it even necessary to do that though? West seems to just relax his arms after the necessary muscle groups have all been used to launch the ball - any follow through would technically be wasted motion after the shot leaves your hands anyways. Cocking back is a bad habit to be certain, which is why I think shooting coaches preach "follow through" - to counter it. But West doesn't do that, he simply relaxes after the ball has left his hands - it actually seems really efficient to me

Are you questioning whether the wrist snap and follow through is necessary?

23+ foot range, certainly - Curry trains to do this, and actually West probably did not ever practice that far out.
21-23 not so sure - neither player really tries to take this shot any more often than the other, as it's not ideal for Curry seeing as how 1 or 2 feet back would be a 3 point shot and it's not ideal for West because a few feet in is a more accurate shot
21 or less, edge goes to West - for the same reason 23+ goes to Curry. West trained more for this range.
Their sweet spots are in different spots so you can't really call one "better" than the other unless you favor a long range game over a mid range game or visa versa.

What can I do for you?
Re: Jerry West and Steph Curry's jump shots in slow motion:
West is an under-appreciated basketball legend. Easily the 3rd best SG ever, and he's demonstrated a very savvy basketball mind as an executive, as well.
And Curry is a legend in the making, at least as a shooter.

Curry looks a millisecond longer. Granger glances to his right at Blake on the wing. That's all Curry needs. His second dribble is across his body to the outside of his left foot. Still moving at full speed, Curry absorbs and banks all his lateral motion and forward momentum, planting his feet softly, at the very edge of the red three-point line, as if stepping into a pair of slippers -- toes and feet perfectly aligned to the target. Then, borrowing a move from Hall of Famer Jerry West, Curry compresses his right knee, hip, torso, elbow and wrist into a perfectly stacked vertical coil before adding an almost imperceptible amount of extra force to his final dribble. Most shooters set their feet, focus on the rim, compress their lower body and then lift and launch. Curry eliminates any wasted time and energy by riding that final, slightly higher bounce up off the floor, instantaneously triggering his shooting motion.

Could you of picked a worse f*cking slow-mo for Curry? It wasn't slow-mo, it was a flip book at 10 FPS.
