Many people think that in Canada it is a 25 year sentence. They are dead wrong!
The Criminal Code of Canada states First Degree Murder is a LIFE sentence. This means you are in a Federal Prison for the rest of your life however you can apply for parole after 25 years.

Dummy, do you know the difference between being eligible for parole and actually being out of prison? A LIFE sentence doesn't mean that you sit in jail for 25 years and then they let you free. A life sentence means that you are locked up for LIFE but you can apply for parole after you have served at least that 25 years. And depending on the crime, often times it gets denied. Wow, how did I not see this stupid comment before?

edit: and to add, that's where the phrase "25 to life" comes from. It's common. It means the same thing when you get that sentence. That you will be doing a minimum of 25 years in prison for your crime, with chance of parole after year 25 but also a chance of lifetime imprisonment if it gets denied.

There are many states in the United States where a convict can be released on parole after a decade or more has passed. For example, sentences of "15 years to life" or "25 years to life" may be given; this is called an "indeterminate life sentence'", while a sentence of "life without the possibility of parole" is called a "determinate life sentence".[1] Even when a sentence specifically denies the possibility of parole, government officials may have the power to grant amnesty or reprieves, or commute a sentence to time served.

Next time before you say something this stupid, please do some research. Hit a library or something.
