Spurs are playing the same way they did last year, which got them a chip... yet Pop is all of a sudden sabotaging Kawhi, who you probably wouldn't even credit wasn't it for that exact system?

Give him some time. He couldn't practice with the team for a while and the Spurs always have terrible starts.
That said, we won't be running the offense through him, because he's not that good of an offensive player.
I would start the regular season half assed also if I won the championship the previous season especially if I was Tim Duncan's age.
