While one summer league game is not a true measure of what a career will become I do hope this brings down some of the ridiculous expectations people have for this guy.

Should people calm down on Durant for going 5-17?

Actually, yes.

However the expectations for Oden are even more ridiculous than those for Durant and this is an Oden thread not a Durant thread.

In the NBA. The real NBA. I wouldn't give up on Durant at all but I don't see how holding his bad game against him is any less reasonable than downgrading Oden for playing poorly in his debut. The guy goal-tended a three-pointer. Nerves and inexperience were clearly major factors. In fact, the Celtics were double-teaming Oden. Does anyone mention that? Guy goes from one season of whipping whatever college big someone tosses at him to getting doubled by NBA-caliber players (Leon Powe is not a starter but he can bang with just about anyone). He should get some time before he's evaluated, just like anyone else.

That's just silly. These guys have no real NBA experience, they have only been playing against college kids and are still teenagers.

If there's a difference it's minor. Durant gets regularly compared to Tracy McGrady and Dirk Nowitzki. He was the college player of the year and a number of sites said he should be the top pick in the draft.

The expectations people have for both these guys is nuts. People are pegging Greg Oden to turn Portland into a title contender within the next three years. People are already penciling Kevin Durant in to be the NBA's top scorer at least twice in his career.

That's just insane. It means people are overlooking what should be obvious weaknesses.

Oden is foul prone and plays outside his center of gravity. If slashers attack him aggressively he becomes a near non-factor on defense. He's terrible at defending the pick and roll.

Kevin Durant has poor footwork and regularly is off balance. Plus when pressured he just takes fade-away jumpers instead of attacking.

I expect both to be very good players but people need to come back to reality a bit.

I've seen almost no talk from analysts about Portland winning a Championship in the next three seasons. Duranr is expected to be a big scorer because he has the tools to be a big scorer. The scoring title isn't a lock but I don't see why believing he's going to get a lot of points is unreasonable.

What young big isn't foul prone? Especially at 19 in the NBA, an age where refs will show him no mercy? He'll get into less foul trouble with experience and the respect of the refs. That's how these things work.

When is the last time a 19 year-old was flawless? You're nitpicking a teenager as if he was a 5-year vet. You think he's not going to work on his game?

How many 7' NBA centers are good at defending the pick and roll? Hell, most players can't even defend the pick and roll; it's why we get killed in international ball.
