I am from a big city but went to college in a small border town.
I almost played with best player of the 70's who was under 7 feet. I ended up playing against his team several times in the playoffs.
My number was retired by a city I didn't play in and by a team that I'm not most known for.

    Doc J ??

My player is from the Gervin era. My player was no where near as consistent a scorer as Gervin, but his single season high was higher even then Gervin.

I was going to say Dr.J. I needed to see what decade he played in.

So my player almost played with Dr J, and later their teams were rivals.

There were several clues that I was unsure of myself. I know very little about UNC, so wasn't sure of the town sizes (especially back then). Also, I don't know who the poster thought the greatest under 7' player is from the 70s, and I don't know what constitutes "almost" playing with somebody.

What I did know is that he is a champion, a scoring champion, an argument could be made that Jordan is more known by "Air Jordan" rather than "Michael Jordan" (especially since Nike is what keeps Jordan most relevant these days), and his jersey was retired by the Heat.

We have a winner! It's Tiny Archibald.

My next clue was going to going to be I led the league in assists.

When the leagues merged Tiny Archibald was traded to the on the NY Nets, but the Nets had to pay a penalty to the Knicks for being in the same city and so they sold the rights to Dr. J to the Sixers.

I will help out and say that he played in the 80s and really is not very well known (hence why it is difficult).
He was also drafted by the Bulls, but never played for them.

Alright, I can see why you would say so, but IMO more people called him as "Michael Jordan" and not "Air Jordan", which was actually my biggest clue

"I have played for 3 teams throughout my 5 years in the league." This clue came off as if he is still active.
