In rec leagues I've witnessed and been called for travels in similar situations to that play, however I don't know how the NBA typically handles that play though - the NBA calls games A LOT different than rec leagues (no tic tac fouls and a lot of other things that fly in the NBA are given in my areas local rec leagues...). Blown calls have existed throughout NBA history though, if it is a blown call. First time I'd ever seen that play pointed out though.

At least Ray didn't flop after he let it go. Maybe the refs were so impressed that they let him get away with it.

Or maybe travelling is like FT lane violation and palming the ball. It's one of those things that gets called once in a while because it's in the rule book and is supposed to be enforced, so the refs will just at random blow the whistle. And they'll say what the hell, and then call the next play a travel as well. And you're like what the hell? Lebron took 4 steps earlier in the game and now you guys decide to start blowing the whistle on travelling after you haven't called a travel in the previous four games?

I've seen it called as a travel too.

I think you gotta dribble while you are stepping back if you already have possession of the ball.

But as you are in the motion of catching it you can step back and it won't be a travel.

You right though, the NBA are pretty iffy on their calling so IDK

It's a clear travel really by the laws, but in the NBA and at that moment it shouldn't have been called. Was reffed correctly in my opinion. The NBA always lets those little travels on ball catches and gather go, look at most players when they gather or receive passes and quite a lot of the time they take steps that would be a travel in another league. Same goes for carries not being called. It's just the NBA style really.
