The Joe theisman injury was nasty....

I think it between that and the slit throats in Hockey...

that one college football had a really nasty injury like theisman's looks like he almost snapped both his legs in that picture

Actually, now that I think of it, there is something much worse that what anyone has mentioned so far. There is a video of it somewhere, although I cannot find it right now.

I'm not sure if it was in the states or overseas, but it was a formula one race in either the 1970's or early 1980's. A driver spun out, and his teammate stopped to check on him [why, I have no idea], while he was crossing the road, another driver hit him straight on, completely shredding his body, basically cutting it into two pieces. The heavy pieces of his body hit the driver head on and also killed the driver as well.

The video is almost unwatchable.
