Default Puzzle Games: The GOAT Genre

No genre of video games has the replay value of a great puzzler. They are immune to graphics upgrades because with them it is all about the gameplay.

When talking about puzzle games, these come through my head:

    Tetris
    Dr. Mario
    PuyoPuyo
    Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
    Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust-a-Move)
    Picross

MMmmm. Sometimes. Sometimes they can be repetitious or discouraging. Like Spider Solitaire with 4 suites. I've beat it over a handful of times, but it's still ridiculously hard and random.

I like logic puzzles better. Kickle Cubicle (sp?) for 8-bit Nintendo rocked. I remember Gyromite being good.

Another game that has puzzles that you wouldn't normally think of is the Prince of Persia games, where you have to figure out how to get across a room, sometimes on the fly while you're moving. It's entertaining. Sometimes you just stare across a room in first person view and just say here goes nothing... and take off and see what you can do. Not much replay value in any of those though.

    Puzzle games… I love 'em.

    Some of my favorites:

    Qix/Ultimate Qix/Volfied
    Lumines
    Tetris
    Columns
    Puzzle Bubble
Panel de Pon aka Tetris Attack aka Pokemon Puzzle League
    Ikaruga
    Lemmings
    Magical Drop 3
    Baku Baku

I'll agree that they have unlimited replay value. Always challenge for hi score and fast times! Games where there is always an element to improve and build score are timeless…

My company will be adding another puzzle game to the genre in a few weeks

We'll be presenting at the Philadelphia Convention Center on the weekend of November 21-23rd.

I love a good puzzler. Especially a good hearty one, like Ico, which sort of blurs the line between puzzler and platformer, and a few other things.

I kind of feel like the online availability of puzzlers has sort of wiped out the console development of them.

Here's one of my current favorites. I beat it about a month ago. It's flash, and can be a little sluggish. I made a thread about it in the OTC, since there's a few engineers in there, and it's a design/physics game, but no one bit:

Chu-chu is my favorite game of all-time. I bought a Dreamcast just to play it, and the overly ambitious Shenmue.
