the difference is Lebron was great in the playoffs in 09, like the best playoff run of all time for someone who didn't win a championship. Anyway to answer the question MJ has 88-93 and 96-98 so 9 years. Kareem has like 10 from 70-81.

If MJ didn't retire twice, I'd say he would've been the best from '87 - '99. 13 years. LeBron has been the best since like 2009, so like a solid 8 years. With players competing for the throne here and there during brief stretches just like any other king of an era.
