Ok kids, I'll try to answer this seriously.
Back in 1996, the league was dominated by a bunch of old guys from the 80s: Jordan, Barkley, Malone, Hakeem etc.
There was a lack of young stars. You basically were limited to Shaq, Penny, Grant Hill and Jason Kidd.
The years before that had been weak, notably the 1995 rooks Stackhouse and Mighty Mouse.
At this time, everyone was definitely looking big time for the next MJ: JR Rider, Harold Miner, Stackhouse, everyone failed spectacularly.
Then out of the blue comes this Kobe and the hype is off the charts. I got my first jersey of Kobe 8, my mom bought it for Christmas for me.
So kids like to act like Kobe wasn't a star, but he was big time even as a rookie, before we had internet for real.
I understand how it might seem strange to today's box score obsessed nerds, but this was a different time, we used our eyes. We had Kobe do stuff like this as a rookie:

Dunks were difficult to come by in the 90s, so players back then made them count. Look at Kobe here being creative, having that 90s style of dunking which was style and power.
So Kobe was exciting and he showed glimpses of stardom already in his rookie season. This is like how some morons even today don't realize that they're watching a future top 10 in Luka Doncic. Their eyes betray them. Back then we all had better eyes.
