Default Why was Kobe an All-Star in 1998?

Only started 1 game all year, put up a very pedestrian line of 15/3/3 on 43/34/79...clearly not even close to an all star. Kobe would go on to get swept by the Jazz in the playoffs and only averaged 10/2/1 on 37/0/69 in that series (and had that infamous barrage of air ball threes).

Seems pretty obvious the NBA tried to hype him up way before he was even a good player because it was MJ's last year...just another example of Kobe having accolades he didn't deserve (see all-nba defense awards).

Kobe is one of the best players ever though and IS the most similar to Jordan in terms of playstyle...but he still has a bunch of accolades he didn't come close to deserving.

They do that. Garnett made it a year before he actually deserved it

Kobe was doing that in only 26 minutes a game, and percentages were different back then because you could actually play defense.

He had 5 rings while the guy who was supposed to be better than Jordan had 3 asterisk rings.

That's STILL not all-star level...come on man. He didn't even start on his team .Eddie Jones was solid, but also not an all star player even though he somehow made it to the all star in 98 as well. I always say the last half of the 90's is the weakest modern era time period.

Kobe played better in 99, yet DIDNT make the all star team...I wonder why (MJ was gone)

because people knew if he was given starter minutes he'd be averaging 20+

he had the talent and was obviously better than eddie at the time but del harris was a prick and got canned because of it

kobe was the best player for the west that allstar game and 2nd best for the entire allstar game overall

1998 kobe dropped 30+ on MVP jordan twice ... according to 3ball hes better than peak kobe but he couldn't even handle a 19 year old version lol

Then why did Kobe go on to get swept by the Jazz in the 98 playoffs and only average 10/2/1 on 37/0/69 in that series (and had that infamous barrage of air ball threes)?

CLEARLY he was not an all-star caliber player, having 5 or 6 good scoring games over an entire season is not a big deal at all.

Kobe played 38mpg in 1999 and still only put up 20/5/4 on 46/27/84...which is nothing special given those minutes.

It's extremely obvious that Kobe should not have been voted as an all-star in 1998. I mean, yeah that time frame was the weakest of the modern era...but still.

Why so mad? It's not like this is some troll or ludicrous topic.

The objective numbers and eye test clearly showed that Kobe was NOT allstar level.

Maybe he was an injury replacement and I am forgetting?

    20/5/4 at 20 years old as the 2nd option behind a near 30ppg player with a 3rd option averaging 18ppg ( glen rice )
