Default Bobcats roll the dice, draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

The Charlotte Bobcats could have invested the No. 2 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft on a shooter such as Florida guard Bradley Beal or North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes. They could have drafted a rebounder such as Kansas power forward Thomas Robinson. They could have drafted a scorer such as Syracuse guard Dion Waiters.

Instead, the Bobcats invested the No. 2 pick on a player whose jump shot would not distinguish him in a pickup game at suburban Charlotte’s Morrison YMCA.

The absence of a jump shot is the reason drafting Kentucky small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is a gamble.

Associated Press:

Kidd-Gilchrist, a Somerdale, N.J., native selected No. 2 overall, is expected to be a big part of that future.

"I just want to win basketball games," Kidd-Gilchrist, who lost just four games last season while helping the Wildcats to a national championship. "The past is the past around here."

Added Taylor: "I couldn't have said it better myself."

Kidd-Gilchrist and Taylor both play small forward, although they have different strengths.

Taylor is a better shooter, while Kidd-Gilchrist is known as a very solid defender who can cover any position on the floor and is effective in transition, which should bode well for playing in Dunlap's up-tempo offense.

Kidd-Gilchrist comes into the NBA as the youngest player in the league at a ripe age of 18. "He's just a kid," said his mother, Cynthia Richardson. "In reality, he should be going into his senior year of high school."

I'm excited to watch these kids next season. We're not gonna win games but hopefully we can see them start to progress.

Though believing that former Kentucky standout Michael Kidd-Gilchrist needed to improve his perimeter shooting, first-year Charlotte Bobcats Coach Mike Dunlap waited for the right moment to broach the subject. That moment came as Dunlap watched Kidd-Gilchrist's frustration rise as he missed shots more often than the other players in an informal shootaround. "I went to him when no one was around and I said, 'Can we get this thing to where you want it?'" Kidd-Gilchrist eagerly accepted the offer. "God, coach, let's do it," he said. Lexington Herald-Leader

In a telephone interview last week, Dunlap noted Kidd-Gilchrist's willingness to change the shot. "If you don't get a willing participant in this thing, it feels jammed down his throat," the Bobcats' coach said. An overriding question might be this: Can a player of Kidd-Gilchrist's age (He turned 19 on Wednesday) still make a significant change in his shooting motion? Or do habits become ingrained and thus impossible to change by then? Dunlap said the amount of time NBA players can devote to shooting can translate into big improvement. Using power forwards and centers as an example, Dunlap said, "Some couldn't make a two with a pencil. You look at them four years later, and you go, 'Geez, he's got a good 18-footer.'"
