I feel like Melo is in a situation where he is enamored with playing for New York, and being a Knick but the problem is that organization isn't running right and he knows it.
It's one of those situations where action on the organizations part has to be taken and positive changes made immediately or I see that dude walking, regardless of his feelings about wanting to be in NY.

Nets turned two aging players that didn't play and flipped them for a 26 year old scoring machine.
The Knicks were inept to follow the same path and decided to outright waive two of their aging players rather than try to get something in return for them.
Both teams are trash but Knicks philosophy is confusing.
