If he can get within three to four feet to pull it off.

And I don't say that to be hateful. He just honestly happens to have awful touch with his back to the basket outside of four feet; that hook quickly loses all semblance of an effective basketball shot.

The good news is he may be slowly realizing that he's huge, and even if he catches the ball away from the hoop, he may be able to bang and improve position, at which point he can find his little zone.
