This may take a little from his ability to defend Howard but I bet he kept most of his lower-body muscle which is the most important thing when it comes to fighting for position.

As an overall basketball player and not just exclusively focusing on Howard Perk is doing the right thing. At a lower weight he'll be quicker on his feet to cover more ground defensively, run the floor better and maybe increase his jumping ability.

Long-term he's easing up the load on his knees which is important for any player and especially a 7-footer. He is thus improving his durability and looking even longer-term it's healthier in life to forestall things like heart attacks and diabetes to be lighter person.

Well it makes sense. He's the Dwight stopper and D12 lost weight (because of the injury) so he has to lose weight too. That's dedication my friends!

I'll reserve judgment until I see how his lost of weight is reflected in his defense. From this vantage point, I see it being an advantage in regards to his quickness, but a big disadvantage everywhere else. You can't tell me losing that much mass isn't going to subtract from Perkins' overall strength; also, I don't think Perkins is naturally a very athletic person, so the theory that he may be able to jump higher is somewhat dubious.

But can't really tell until he plays. He probably mostly did this to help him actually remain healthy during the season, like RMWG noted. Doubt it was in response to the Dwight move, especially since I don't see him having less muscle and otherwise mass than Dwight helping his case defensively.
