Sanitarium or Fade To Black.

Re: Best slower paced/"softer" Metallica song
I'd go:
1. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- Amazing opening to set the mood.
2. For Whome the Bell Tolls
3. Harvester of Sorrow
4. The Unforgiven
5. Sad But True
6. One
7. Fade to Black
8. Nothing Else Matters
9. The Thing That Should Not Be

Sanitarium would be number too if I have to choose. Great chorus.

There is no weakness to that song. The opening. The melody. The vocals. The chorus. The guitar work to end the song.

Yeah that's true. I love those opening guitar harmonics even. The melody might be the highlight though, but you're right everything in the song is flawless. The solos fit very well.

I don't consider all those songs to be slow paced or soft really, some of them are, but Sad But True which is probably my favorite on that list is pretty loud and blunt.
"DO MY DIRTY WORK, SCAPEGOAT!"
the power chords are pretty intense on it right from the beginning. i wouldnt really group it with Fade to Black and such.
this version of FWtBT pumps me up also
but as far as the actual slow/soft songs, i'd prob. agree with Sanitarium ftw. i'd have to listen to them all in succession tho to say for sure.

I was iffy on some. Same with Harvester of Sorrow. I mean relative to thrash era Metallica though. Maybe trudging is a better word.

yeah i figured thats what you meant, even the "harder" songs that i mentioned would look slower in tempo if you actually wrote them out on a sheet of music compared to Creeping or Master etc
at least i would assume, i've never actually written anything on a sheet of music

Don't listen to a lot of Metallica but I'd pick The Unforgiven.

1. Sanitarium
2. For Whom the Bell Tolls
3. Fade to Black
4. The Unforgiven
And then the rest, don't really like those songs as much
