Where do you think all these 3 pointers come from? They almost all come from penetration kickout due to unimpeded dribbling because of the lack of ability to physically impeded the penetrator - which in practice meant getting real close with your belly and upper body to the guard.

Fact is that its the easy penetration from the top of the 3 point line that allows these many 3s. Take away the easy no touch penetration and 3s go way down.

they got rid of hand checking in 2004, but three point attempts have still gone up every year since then.

if hand checking was the only reason 3pt attempts went up, it should have plateaued since then.

players are shooting more threes because the league has realised its a smart shot, so players practice it more, and they've become better shooters on average.
