Default When Can Teams Start Trading Again?

Right after the post-season ends, or draft night?

I think there is an exception for draft night for trades that include picks. I'm not positive though.

A team can start making trades as soon as they get eliminated from playing games, you rarely see anything until the NBA draft though.

That doesn't sound right to me. It doesn't make sense that all but 4 teams could make trades right now. I think it simply starts at the draft.

    88. What is the trading deadline?

It is the date during the season after which trades are prohibited. It is defined as the 16th Thursday of the season. The prohibition on trades lasts until the day following the team's final game of the season (see question number 85).
    85. When can't a player be traded? Can players be given "no-trade" clauses in their contracts?

When the trading deadline has passed. Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option or ETO.

Even so, I think I can remember 1 time when any team ever traded before the conclusion, and that was the Bobcats and Clippers swapping #1 picks in '04. They'll usually wait till a day or 2 before the draft...

I always thought it was an exception on draft day, trades were ok when free agency began.

Makes me wonder even more why off-season trades don't occur this early. That would give players much more time to get to know their teammates, coaches, city, and the system they will eventually play in.

It's really rare to hear an excellent offer this early into the offseason. Everyone waits one or two days before the draft to trade because that's when some teams get desperate to receive a high draft pick and may sweeten the deal.

Right now, I am sure all GMs are talking to each other about various trade ideas.

There was a trade during the playoffs last season (or it might have been the year before). It involved nothing major or significant at all. Not 100% but I want to say it was scrub X for money/future considerations/conditional future 2nd rounder

Blazers were apparently offered Mike Miller for Travis Outlaw and the #13. Thankfully the Blazers declined.

actually not true, draft night allows for player movement and the full trade unlock happens in early july.

No when a team stops playing their games they can trade anybody whose contract isn't set to expirer up until July 1. Then theres a moratorium of a week were the league converts from using the current years (07-08) salaries to the next season's (08-09) salaries and all players with expiring contracts become free agents. During that week there can be no free agent signings or trades, and when that ends we have what you were calling the full trade unlock.
