MJ won the MVP because he averaged 32 ppg on 46% thru 3 games to get his team a 3-0 lead.. That's all that mattered.. And his stats were stellar compared to virtually everyone else in the series - for example, Pippen averaged an amazingly horrific 15 ppg on 34%.
So I'll state the facts again - Magic, Bird, Kareem, Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, Wade, and Lebron all needed someone else to win FMVP or be the best player in a Finals...
But MJ never did - he was always the best player and won FMVP in every Finals he played in - he's the only guy out of the guys listed, which is just another reason he's goat.

no doubt. at least half the time the eventual champions meet the next best team in an earlier round. how about a conference semifinals mvp award?

It's a good thing Dennis Rodman doesn't care about accolades.
Because if he did, he might have been a little miffed about not earning the NBA Finals MVP award.
"I thought Dennis did everything to deserve the MVP," said Luc Longley. "He did everything to help us win. Not just in the Finals, but through the whole playoffs. Without him, there's no doubt we wouldn't have won."

MJ didn't average 32ppg on 46% for the series though.
He was outplayed by both Rodman and Kemp that series.

MJ won MVP without dispute.
So I'll repeat the facts again - facts that you cannot dispute, because they are facts:
MJ is the only player that never needed a teammate to win FMVP or be the best player in a Finals... Otoh, Magic, Bird, Kareem, Kobe, Lebron, Shaq and Wade ALL needed a teammate to win FMVP or be the best player in the Finals.

He did through 3 games, which were the games that mattered and decided the series - everything after that was garbage time and stat-padding.
Also, his 27 ppg on 42% was by far the best stats of anyone in the series - by comparison, Pippen averaged 15 ppg on 34%.
Btw, other than his superior stats compared to everyone else in that series, the offense ran through MJ - everyone else got their offense based on the threat of MJ's offense - his presence on the court allowed the Bulls to keep pace with the elite teams offensively - he's the only guy that could get 27 ppg - take that away and the Bulls get blown out... Whereas Rodman's rebounds are more replaceable.
And that was MJ's worst Finals - just think - if Lebron averages 27 ppg on 42% in the 2007 or 2011 Finals, he's 4/6 instead of 2/6, and we're having an intense discussion right now about whether he can realistically catch MJ.. But unfortunately, Lebron wasn't good enough for that - simply not the goat.

Historically, some of the greatest NBA Players of all time have won at least two. Actually, I bet if you broke it down, you could create a consistent top 10- all time list just based on players with 2 or more NBA Finals MVPs.
Jordan
Shaq
Bird
Magic
Kareem
LeBron
Bryant
Hakeem
Only one left off the list is Wilt (he only has 1) and Russell, but we already know why Russell doesn't have any, they didn't exist at the time lol
I'll be dammed if those 10 players aren't in nearly every single top 10 list (among intelligent NBA fans) all time list.
Jordan
Magic
Kareem
Shaq
Bryant
LeBron
Bird
Hakeem
Russell
Honorable Mention: Wilt (who is the only player that only has 1 and is usually considered a top 10 player all-time)

Really? The FMVP is battled between 2 teams, 15 players during a span of only 4-7 games!! Which means ANYBODY can win it... you just have to be the most productive player during that microscopical stretch....
during 4 games ANYBODY can be the FMVP..... this is why the FMVP does NOT mean you have been the best player in your team, but the MVP does, it means you have been the best player the entire year.......... instead of a week...
If you dont believe me... take a look at this... and please tell me if they were those teams best players... and that they could also win the actual MVP..
1. James Worthy won the FMVP over Magic & Kareem.. uh oh? James > Magic-Kareem
2. Cedric won the FMVP over Larry Bird... uh oh? Cedric (who u say?) > Bird
3. Chauncey Billups won the FMVP over Hamilton & co...
4. Tony Parker won the FMVP over Tim Duncan...
5. Pierce won the FMVP over Garnett, Allen & co...
6. Joe Dumars won the FMVP over Isiah Thomas...
7. Dennis Johnson won the FMVP over Gus Williams & Sikma
8. Wes Unseld won the FMVP over Elvin Hayes
9. Bill Walton won the FMVP over Maurice Lucas
10. Jo Jo White won the FMVP over Dave Cowens
11. Willis Reed won the FMVP over Walt Frazier, Debbuschere & Earl Monroe
and so on..............
Please... stop overrating this trophy...... its the CHAMPIONSHIP & MVP (BEING THE MAN) that matters... FMVP means NOTHING, it means only that THAT player just so happened to be the most productive in the Finals for the winning team, during a 4-7 game stretch....... nothing more...
------->FMVP is not more worthy than the actual MVP<-------
------->FMVP does NOT mean you are the teams best player<---------
So the way you combat people that you feel overrate FMVP's is....by underrating MVP's.
Surely you don't actually think they mean nothing, right? While it is indeed "a week of basketball", it is far and away the most important week of the year, and for many top players the most important week of their entire careers.
Don't fight hyperbole with hyperbole lol. Doesn't accomplish anything.

Re: Is FMVP the most overrated accomplishment ever?
Basketball isn't like football or baseball, where some scrub player can catch fire and win the mvp. In bball, stars impact the game. There has never been one scrub who came out of nowhere to win fmvp. Sure, there are your exceptions as OP listed but even thise guys are or were stars. But 9 out of 10 times, the best and most impactful player (usually "the man"), wins the award.
So it carries a lot of weight. But yes, the regular season mvp is usually a greater indicator of how good you are as a player given the much larger sample size. But it still matters and carries weight to show up when it matters most and win fmvp.

No - MVP is: the award of regular season warriors like your deity and saviour, LeBran James.

pauk made a shitty thread, but doesn't take away the fact that the MVP is the most prestigious award in NBA, or any sport for that matter. It shows you were the most consistent player over the course of a season, and were better than all of your peers. It is literally the thing kids dream about when aspiring to be sports stars. That and being a champion.
FMVP is right under MVP though.
