Exactly. Red drafted Bird a year early knowing hed go back to school. He traded some guys you never heard of for HOF Tiny Archibald. He then traded for a Pistons lottery pick that ended up being #1. He used the pick to trade for Robert Parish and #3.....which he used on Kevin Mchale. He traded someone else you never heard of(Rick Robey) for HOF Dennis Johnson. He traded Maxwell(an earlier pick he made) for Bill Walton to help win another ring. They also had Danny Ainge who they got with a second rounder because he was still on the Bluejays and his contract had to be bought out. So he slipped down and Red drafted a future all star for nothing. You know Gerald Henderson who used to be on the Hornets? Red traded his dad for a pick that ended up #2 overall to get Len Bias. But we know how that went. So he later got a steal drafting Reggie Lewis late.
Red Added like 9 stars during Birds career by outsmarting the rest of the league. Hell Red actually drafted Nick Galis(arguably the best European player of the 80s) in 79 but he got hurt and went to Greece instead.
Its Lebrons fault the Warriors were stupid enough to want Joe Barry Carroll more than Parish AND Mchale and that the Suns took a 4/4 backup center for Dennis Johnson AND a first round pick?
And even if Bird had refused to go to the Celtics who drafted him early(he had the option) know where he goes? The Lakers to play with Kareem. They would have drafted Bird over Magic at the time im sure. Magic said he wouldnt even come out to go to the Bulls.
Its entirely possible that Magic ends up the 1980 #1 pick who the Celtics had.
Then Magic gets to play with Red ripping off the league and Bird is in LA with Kareem, Nixon, and later Worthy(they would have had #1 that year no matter what...the trade to get the pick from the Cavs in 82 was made in the 79/80 season).
Cant really compare the management Bird and Steph had to Lebron on the Cavs the first run.
Jordan is a better comparison. Though the Bulls next 3 first rounders were Brad Sellers, Scottie Pippen, and Horace Grant and the Cavs were Luke Jackson, Shannon Brown, and JJ Hickson. They didnt even have a pick in 2005....because they traded their 2005 lottery pick for Wesley Person in 1997.
These players arent building teams around themselves.
Their success is at times set in motion or stopped before they are even drafted.
