Is David Lynch the most pretentious director?
Twins Peak, Inland Empire, Mulholland Dr
those are the ones I've seen within the past couple of years. But I can pretty much say, get the fukk outta here man. Trying to hard to get a twist and to mind fukk the audience. If the intention or climax of the films are obvious, he always those this sh1t where he's trying to force it too hard. I had to force myself in finishing Inland Empire.
I bet the hipsters have orgasms when they watch his movies though. I seen Elephant Man, but that was a long time ago, I don't even remember what happens.
I know alot of you are going to name Paul Thomas Anderson, but atleast his movies are entertaining with good writing.

All I have seen of his is Lost Highway and I could not follow that for shit. I understand being surreal and abstract and what not but it still has to make some sense and be engaging. Oh yeah, I watched Eraserhead which is from 1977 and it was alright.

I can't stand David Lynch. Mulholland Drive is drivel, yet pretentious people like it because they were told it is artsy. Eraser Head is the same way.
Elephant Man was decent and Blue Velvet was good, but that is it.

Aronofsky has a significantly higher pretense-substance ratio.

True that. I called that one of my favorite movies when I was a senior in high school ('02) and it was totally to be hipster and pretentious. I watched it a few years ago and it was just...weird. That creepy homeless guy and the mini-grandparents...yeesh.

He's good technically in terms making his films aesthetically nice, but I'll take a lesser "technical" director who actually makes coherent and enjoyable films over that pretentious weirdo in Lynch.

He's just obsessed with dreams like Salvador Dali was.
I wouldn't label him "pretentious", because he's just a cinematic artist indulging in his own tastes. Maybe a bit too indulgent, but I don't think he's doing it for the purpose to seem "enlightened" or "more intelligent". Some of his fans can be labeled pretentious but not Lynch himself.

It doesn't HAVE to be. Perhaps it might be nice if linear stories are what you prefer, but a moviemaker should have the freedom to do whatever the f*ck he/she wants with no rules.

Twin Peaks was awesome, I really enjoyed that show. That has to be one of my favorite shows of all time. Don't know much about his other work tough.

If you want to judge his personality why don't you watch his interviews where he talks about his underlying intentions and objectives he tries to achieve in his movies?

Re: Is David Lynch the most pretentious director?
Mulholland Drive is on of the 10 best movies of the past 20 years.
Lost Highway is great too.
Lynch is awesome.

Re: Is David Lynch the most pretentious director?
David Lynch can be pretentious, but I think a lot of it is him being weird. But that doesn't mean he's never, genuinely pretentious. I feel like I need to revisit his entire filmography, as some of it was just too long ago and they're in need of second viewings, in general.
Paul Thomas Anderson? No. He's the shit.

I haven't seen Black Swan, but I've seen everything else. I wouldn't agree.
