Mine is 2000s specifically 2001-2004 era. The 2001 Eastern conference playoffs were wild and fun to watch despite being a clearly weaker conference at the time and the Lakers taring up the West.

1) How can the 50s be in front of the 60s, if the league was segregated (league was 55% black in 68-69, but only 15%-20% at the end of the 50s)?

2) How can the 70s be first if so much of the talent was in the ABA for more than half of the decade?

Celtics stopped dominating and there were various champions that decade. Just my opinion

Take a look at the rosters of the NBA in the 60's. As an example, the '66-67 Lakers, who basically had the equivalent of a prime Lebron, and a near-prime Wade, in West and Baylor, as well as a better roster...and could only go 36-45.

1. 1960's - Every Team is loaded because there is only eight or nine teams. Seriously the average team has 2-4 Hall of Famers and usually at least one in his prime. Rivalries litter the landscape, all challenging the dynastic Celtics. The Hawks, the Lakers, the Sixers all have great teams and great battles with Boston. Five of the 20 greatest players of all-time are active and effective for the entire decade.

2. 1980's - Another Pre-expansion era that saw great teams at the top loaded with Hall of Famers and saw the average teams with great balance and depth. The Lakers/Celtics rivalry carries the decade, but the 76ers early on and Pistons later also had all-time great teams in '83 and '89 respectively. Through in the stars of the 90's who all got their start in the mid-late eighties and you've got Basketball's Golden Age.

3. 2000's - Despite the expansion of the 1990's the Talent pool has expanded greatly by early in this decade with international players now on almost every roster. Additionally the three-point shot has reached full maturity and now does a lot to make games closer longer. The Spurs and Lakers have dynasties and the Pistons, Mavs, Heat and Celtics all have nice 2-5 year runs as legit title contenders.

4. 1990's - The leagues talent pool was weakened greatly by mass expansion as six new teams joined the league between 1988 and 1994. Defenses became too physical and the league was forced to over compensate with harsh penalties for players who fought or left the bench etc. Despite the dominance of Jordan's Bulls, the league was without a great rivalry all decade. Still the amazing star power of Jordan, Barkley, Malone, Pippen etc. and the era of Great centers with Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, Shaq, Mourning, Daugherty plus fun fringe teams like the Sonics, Pacers and Cavs make this an unforgettable era.

5. 1970's - The NBA's worst post shot clock era is without question the 1970's. The league was missing stars every season through '76 as the ABA and Expansion watered down the league in response to the games rising popularity after the thrilling sixties. In 1967 the Chicago Bulls became the leagues tenth team and there was still no ABA. By 1974 there were 28 professional teams in the two leagues. Even the Great teams and Players in the 70's were underwhelming. We missed the most exciting years of Dr. J, Kareem spent much of his prime on average or below average rosters, Haywood, Hawkins, Roger Brown, Marvin Barnes, Johnny Neumann etc. All the lost stars. Throw in the culture of drugs that permeated the NBA by the mid-70's and you can see why Bird and Magic were like heroes on white horses when they rode in in 1979.

6. 1950's - No Shot clock (for half the decade), few black players, no assistant coaches or GM's, playing in small cities because the arenas were hosting Hockey etc. This is the NBA in it's infant stages. George Mikan, a skilled, super tough, but nonathletic big man was so much better than everyone else he almost won the title on a broken leg in 1951 and did win it the three years before and after.

INC. The 2010's

The talent level has never been higher, but the AAU/coddled star culture has really watered down the competitiveness of the new era stars. The creation of Super Teams is both a good and bad thing as the excitement of putting stars together reminds us of the 80's and 60's but the modern salary keep restrictions make it almost impossible to fill in the gaps around your two or three stars. With NBA franchise's sky rocketing in value, expanding the salary cap by 25-33% or by either allowing a "Franchise Player Exception" that allows your highest paid player not to count towards your cap seems like a ticket to a new Golden Age, we'll see.
