    The thought process here would be using the rim as an aid, I believe. Regardless of when Griffin let go, if it could be deemed that he may have possibly gained an advantage from grabbing the rim (such as an extra millisecond of hang-time or a pivot point allowing him to spin around slightly quicker) then it would be an illegal maneuver.

    To take it to the extreme, if Griffin had done a chin up on the rim then sprung himself very high in the air, all before a player attempted a shot - whether a shot were above the rim or not would not matter - it'd be an illegal maneuver nonetheless. The general concept is the same, just at different ends of the extreme.

    In the case tonight, again, it all happened so quick in regular motion that it was just tough to tell what was happening. I think he may have gotten away with one.
