Should be illegal.

You can't put your hands on the rim when the player on offense is about to shoot the ball. Imagine is Dwight decides to hang on the rim for defensive purposes.

I believe that should have been illegal. However, the play happened so quickly and the rim contact was so brief, that I never noticed it on the first multiple views (before entering this thread to see the super up-close slow motion).

Goal-tending, if you grab on to the rim as a defensive player as a means to impede the shot of an offensive player it is goal tending, this is a clear rule violation there's no grey area about it. The refs must have just missed it.

Doesn't need to be, he was in a shot attempt whilst the rim was grabbed by the defensive player - that is an illegal type of interference under the category of goal tending.
