Re: Was Bill Russell 'Clutch'?
Russell's average MOV(margin of victory) was +16.9
It's hard to be clutch when your team is blowing everybody out

Re: Was Bill Russell 'Clutch'?
Good point about the margin of victory.
However, I'd argue that a player who has never lost a game 7 must be pretty damn clutch. He always helped his teams win the big games.

Good point.
What about elimination games?

Titles are overrated
Re: Was Bill Russell 'Clutch'?
Bill Russell lost 2 elimination games of any kind from age 16 to retirement at age 35. He won two state titles, 2 ncaa titles(55 games in a row), the olympic gold, then 11 NBA titles. He lost 2 elimination games...in his life.
And he had a broken ankle in one of them.
He got it done.

Re: Was Bill Russell 'Clutch'?
I believe he's a 19/29/5 on 50%fg player in Game 7's. The Celtics are 10-0 in those games.

Re: Was Bill Russell 'Clutch'?
According to those who played against him and saw him play he was. I was working on a Russell clutch project some time ago but ran out of time. Here are a couple of articles from when he was playing that mention his clutch moments.

Russell made his free throws when winning or losing the game depended on it. The following is what Fred Schaus, coach of the Los Angeles Lakers whose teams lost four Finals to Russell

Re: Was Bill Russell 'Clutch'?
Russell is Top3 GOAT clutch player ever, along with MJ and Bird.
Russ is the epitome of the winner, 10-0 in GM7, 30 points 42 rebounds in one of them when he needed - and he dominated when almost entire Celtics frontcourt fouled out.

Cool. I was actually referencing those numbers in my earlier post, only limited it to game 7's.
Bill's close out games overall are remarkable. 20/30/6 on 52%fg and 68%ft. Most impressive.
