He was about as integral as Robert Horry/Derek Fisher was to the Lakers, Kenny Smith to the Rockets, Bill Cartwright/Horace Grant/Toni Kucoc were to the Bulls.

None of these guys have their jerseys retired. They are called role players for a reason.

Guys like Bruce Bowen matter so much more in places like San Antonio than they do in big city places like L.A and Chicago.

Trust me, Bowen is loved in S.A. I loved him when I lived there. He deserved to have his number retired. There are roleplayers, and then there are "where you wouldn't have half the championships you have if it wasn't for them" type roleplayers.

Are you seriously comparing those guys to Bowen? Bowen was the defensive identity of those Spurs teams. The Spurs grew to become synonymous with defense due in large part to Bowen.

In a lot of those cases, those guys were better than Bowen. Bowen was the defensive presence on the perimeter, but Duncan and Robinson were the defensive beasts that buoyed the Spurs defense. Defensive bigs >>> Perimeter defense. He was allowed to play guys close cause he had Duncan or Robinson guarding the basket. If you don't believe that, then you must not think much of Duncan's and Robinson's defensive impact.

@ anyone who truly believes this guy is deserving of having his jersey retired. He's an above average role player at best. There are/have been plenty of players in the league that are/were just as important to their teams that will never get their jersey retired.

Seeing as the guy bolded is still playing and has a strong case for having his number retired once he does call it quits, I think your point is moot.

Teams shouldn't retire the jerseys of role players that weren't even with the team for their entire career. But oh well.

Retiring a jersey should be... you're with the team your whole career and you were a star. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Tim Duncan? Sure.

Duncan would get his jersey retired even if they didn't win rings. Bowen wouldn't. And that's the difference. That's why you don't retire the jersey of roleplayers.

I think this is a setup for Ginobili and Parker also getting their jerseys retired. How do you retire Bowen's and not those 2? See where this leads? It's a slippery slope. Just retire the best... which Bowen wasn't.

you obviously dont get the impact that bruce had on the spurs. we were the big 4 for a few years. funny to see all the haters in here that dont understand what bruce brought the table. a bunch of offensive loving lebron nut huggers seems like.

every spurs fan out there and anyone who watched most of bruce's play knows why his jersey is retired.
