Bill Walton on Michael Jordan: "He Was Basically Average"
http://www.foxsports.com/nba/story/m...average-021215
"Bill Walton has been known to have an eccentric thought or two throughout his career as a broadcaster, but his latest comments about Michael Jordan reach another level of ridiculous.
Walton said Michael Jordan, who is almost unanimously regarded as the best basketball player of all-time, wasn't even a top-three player, claiming Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the GOAT (greatest of all-time)."

Re: Bill Walton on Michael Jordan: "He Was Basically Average"
Misleading title. He said Jordan was basically average athletically. That's just as ridiculous but he didn't say Jordan was an average basketball player, just that he wasn't top 3 (also ridiculous). At least Kareem has a pretty good GOAT case so he didn't go full retard but god damn Bill.

.
Bill Walton's mad because MJ destroyed his paint-camping:
It's easy to forget that the 1986 Celtics were the #1 defense in the league, SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE they stretched the limits of allowable paint-camping (see Bill Walton above or any 80's Celtics footage such as the 63 pt game) - their defenders were habitual paint-campers.
This is no surprise - a primary characteristic of the best teams in ANY era has always been their superior acumen and strategy, which includes the ability to interpret and stretch the limits of the existing rule structure better than other teams.. This is no different than the Spurs today, who are simply smarter than other teams and bend the rules better than other teams.
Otoh, unlike the 80's Celtics or today's Spurs, many coaches and teams aren't as good at taking full advantage of the regulatory environment - some coaches in previous eras made no effort to ensure their defenders were paint-camping at all, as the announcer points out here about the Miami defense in the 1992 playoffs (the key help defender should be standing right under the rim, not hugging his man near the far edge of the paint):

Re: Bill Walton on Michael Jordan: "He Was Basically Average"
You ever play street ball, then say the player on the other team isn't that good, even though he had your ass with blue cheese on it.
Well, this is kinda like that.

Bill Walton has always said stupid shit. Doesn't change the fact that he was a brilliant player and that is all that matters to me.
