Default Each play type ranked by efficiency - this exposes Curry's secret to efficiency

    .
Here's the percentile rank that 1.00 PPP yields in each category (the higher the rank, the less efficient the play - so if 1.00 PPP translates to the 90th percentile on post-ups and 80th percentile on spot-ups, then spot-ups are more efficient):

    1) Cut: 18.8 percentile

    2) Roll man on screen-rolls: 49.3 percentile

    3) Off-screen: 60.4 percentile

    4) Spot-ups: 65.3 percentile

    5) Hand-offs: 72.4 percentile

    6) Isolations: 77.3 percentile

    7) Post-ups: 81.7 percentile

    8) Ballhandler on screen-rolls: 91.7 percentile

HERE'S HOW THIS RELATES TO CURRY'S EFFICIENCY

The least efficient play shown above (ballhandler on screen rolls) constitutes the largest proportion of offense for all point guards (40% to 60% of their offense).

The exception is Steph Curry.. He's the ballhandler on screen-rolls for only 24.2% of his offense.. He simply employs the higher efficiency options more often than his peers.

Specifically, he uses off-screen, spot-up, hand-off and cut plays more than his peers - basically off-ball plays, just like the goat of goats, Michael Jordan.

Curry has Jordan-type smarts because he's smart enough to get his offense off-ball, which in addition to being more efficient, also gives teammates more opportunity/time with the ball to be comfortable and play their game.. Teammates aren't starved of the ball and don't have to subjugate their game to the whim of the #1 option.

Curry is efficient because he makes shots at a high success rate.

Curry and the Warriors are going to efficiently break the Bulls 72-10 record

I added isolations to the list..

They're more efficient than post-ups and ballhandler on screen-rolls.

Post ups do just fine in today's game btw.. It's being the ball-handler on screen rolls that is the least efficient, by far.

They are only fine at low volume and with the adequate floor spacing via shooters (Shooting encouraged spacing)

Read my works for more info,

Post-ups work at high volume for INDIVIDUAL post players where post-ups are 30% or more of their offense, such as Dirk, Marc Gasol, Brook Lopez, Aldridge, Drummond, Carmelo and many more.

All these guys have excellent post efficiency (over 0.90 PPP), proving that post-ups work at high volume.

Post-ups work fine in any era regardless of spacing, but today's 3-point shot bumps post-ups down the totem poll of efficiency, and makes them a less-preferred option for TEAMS (obviously, individual post players still post-up at high frequency, as shown in the response above).

But in previous eras, the lack of spacing and legal paint-camping meant that help defenders were in closer proximity to the post player than you EVER see in today's game:

However, despite the closer proximity of help defenders in previous eras, teams still used post-ups much more often, since the 3-point shooting prowess didn't exist to create better options.
