Look at the assisted TS and eFG percentages from the 80's. People confuse that decade, the pinnacle of team basketball, with 'no defense being played'. Of course there were more than a few teams that were awful on the defensive end, but it goes beyond that.

I just laugh when the misinformed think the 80s Lakers wouldn't be 'Showtime' in this ERA. Look at what the Suns have been doing the latter part of the decade. Magic, Worthy, Scott, Kareem - all of them were and ARE transcending talents, especially Pat Riley.

The no hand check rule (implemented in 04-05) benefitted iso players. The shooting % on unnasisted field goals went up quite a bit and in 10-11 it was at his highest since the late 70's.
The assisted FG% went down since the rule change. I wonder what caused this. Defenders roaming more?

i think also the implementation of the 3pt line, once teams got adjusted to it, helped offensive effiecincy, so that might be a reason that offense improved, not neccesarily that teams played worse on defense.

im pretty sure that that statistic DaPerceive has posted, isnt the shooting percentage on assisted or unassisted field goals, its the percentage of field goals made that are assisted, or unasisted. every year it adds up to 100%.
but your are right, there is a correlation between the implementation of the no-hand-check, and an increase in unassisted fgs made. so once the rule came in, players iso'd more, and thus, the assists per field goal made dropped.

before the rule the assists per field goal made is solidly around 60%, then with the no-hand-check rule the assists per field goal made drops to around 57% on average since. pretty interesting.

This should be a lesson to those who now talk about how inefficient prime T-Mac was. His TS% was around the league average during his prime

    2001- 52.1%
    2002- 53.2%
    2003- 56.4%
    2004- 52.6%
    2005- 52.6%

Slightly above league average in 2001, comfortably above in 2002 and 2004 and WAY above in 2003. Slightly below in 2005(always seemed liked he played more efficiently that season than the stats suggest for some reason). Combine that with how little he turned the ball over.

I've seen people compare his TS% to players now, and that makes him look worse, but 1998-2004 was just really tough defensively. The toughest defensive era, imo.

Great information , great thread .

There were two dramatic changes ( for offensive freedoms ) , 79 and 05 .

Also , Early League was amazing assisted oriented . Pass, pass and pass .
