Do any of you guys box recreationally?
I might start up next year as a side thing for fun. How much does equipment cost? (Not trying to go amateur or pro or anything like that)

I was thinking both. I was thinking of possibly putting a punching bag in my house but I would like to join a gym for sparring. I live in NYC area so I'm pretty sure it isn't hard to find. I just want an estimate on how much I should expect to spend.

Depends on your area. You should start off by finding a gym to take lessons at and see how it fits you first, then you can think about getting equipment.

Do you know the basics--stance, punching technique, footwork, defensive skills, etc? Wrapping your hands? If not, I'd invest in trainer to teach you those concepts. No use practicing flawed techniques.
You're going to want a speed and heavy bag at minimum for a home setup + a big ass mirror and jump rope. Hand wraps and gloves obviously. Shouldn't run you more than $250.

Thanks, I have training in karate. I do have a black belt in karate and that's the only time I have done sparring. Nowhere near the athlete I was when I was a late teen though. Out of shape, atm.
