muay thai? i don't know if you'll have time to do grapples and holds during a street fight. but that's just me

Re: is mma or muay thai better for street fighting
since mma is already a combination of martial arts, don't think this is a fair comparison. Anyways, yes muay thai can be used for street fights. Wing chun too.

MMA includes Muay Thai
Did you mean to compare Muay Thai to Jujitsu?

Again, MMA includes boxing.
You do realize MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts which incorporates all styles?
As for your intentions, learning martial arts to kick ass at parties is a big

Re: is mma or muay thai better for street fighting
Muay Thai looks way cooler. Ong Bak! Those flying knee and elbow strikes to the head look deadly.
MMA training involves a lot of mounting strange guys and rolling around on them trying to lock in Ju jitsu holds. I hated practicing MMA, the stand up and take downs are so fun but then you have to do all this boring ju jitsu shit. I done it before, it's really boring, mostly just boring ju jitsu on your back shit. Muay thai and boxing are way more fun to do.

MMA, since it includes ground fights, something straight-up Muay Thai lacks of.
And yeah, MMA is just a bunch of styles including MT mashed up together.

Learning to shoot layups
Re: is mma or muay thai better for street fighting
Well, you want to avoid groundfights in streetfights, not only because their might be people just waiting to kick your head in, but also broken glass and other shit lying about.
I would recommend doing an actual self-defence class and then look for people to do some sparring with (since self-defence classes often miss the sparring aspect which is imo very important).

You should learn to distract them with a dance battle instead

This is the appropriate thing to do at parties.

depending on the state you live in killing a man could be problematic for your future.
Opinion based on almost nothing:
Grappling on the ground would be problematic for street fights that arent 1 on 1. Eg. the guys friend could come and stomp on your head.
Striking is the way to go for street fights imo.
but ya pulling out a gun would scare off 99% of people.

Gun >>>>>>>>> bare hands
Most people nowadays don't fight straight up. They either gonna shoot you, stab you, or jump you.
