So 91-92 MJ, or 92-93 MJ
How about 85-86 season for Bird??

    Regular season:
    82 games, 25.8ppg, 9.8rpg, 6.8apg, 2.0spg, 0.6bpg
    .496fg%, .423 3pt%, .896ft%

    Finals
    6 games, 24 ppg, 9.7rpg, 9.5apg, 2.7spg, 0.3bpg
    .482fg%, .368 3pt%, .939ft%

    FMVP

    Good enough?

    Hakeem

    MVP
    DPOY

2nd best player, Otis Thorpe. Blocking Starks potential final ender, holding Ewing to 36%.

Can't go wrong with either player.

I'd take 1991 and 1992 Jordan (essentially equal) followed close by 2000 Shaq. And by close? I mean "determiners" like freethrows, handle and getting better looks in crunchtime.

That shout for Bird is a good one.

    Just to elaborate a bit...

I also question how much better 2000 Shaq would be...if the 90s heavy-hitting BIGS were still @ their best.

I used to think Shaq in 2000 was THE pinnacle of domination. Today? Or when these discussions pop up? I lean more toward his competition, or lack thereof.

Take 1994 Hakeem for example. Guy was a phenom on defense. On offense? I don't think there was a discernible difference with Shaq. Not one where you'd put the other on a separate TIER.

Hakeem was more skilled; Shaq, while skilled, was mostly power.

I take Shaq over Hakeem besides the obvious mj years. 00 is the one year he’s great defensively. There’s are small efficiency and volume gaps. Hakeem is a great playoff performer but Shaq can match him there. After shaq, it might honestly be 13 lebron. Even if it’s partially due to hack a shaq, there’s something valuable in going to the ft line so often

Shouldn't Kareem's 70/71 season be added to the poll?

31.7/16/3.3 on 57.7% for a 66 win team that won the finals.

I think he still played against decent big men. He ragdolled Robinson a few times and Robinson was...Robinson. mutumbo might not have been elite because his offense was awful but he was brilliant defensively and Shaq still played well against him.

On the other hand, you saw people like old Sabonis give Shaq fits and it made you scratch your head. He struggled at times against Malone in the late 90s as well, for some reason.

As far as playoff runs go, I'm not sure how we can disagree here. Hakeem had some of the best playoff runs ever. Shaq was one of the best big men ever but as dominant as the lakers were in some of their runs, I dont know many people who specifically refer to Shaq as an exceptional playoff performer.
Shaq was 2nd in dpoy voting in 00 and the impact stuff bears it out too he was pretty great that year. From cursory glance he was in great shape for his career and more active than usual. It could be just a lucky outlier year but we
