Some people have say he was only that guy in 00/01, and on the other side of the spectrum you have people putting him on that level from when he came into the league through the end of his tenure in Miami. '00 and '01 were Shaq at his absolute best, more focused from start to finish in 2000, but those 2 years were his best mix of physical dominance, skills and knowledge. I think '02 can be put in there, he was heavier and had more nagging injuries, but with the new defensive rules, the fact he made his free throws at 65% during the playoffs and his impact at both ends, I think he was still close.

I don't use the "MDE" thing myself since I don't think it's particularly good or accurate title, but at the earliest, I guess you could start that period in '98 when his overall individual ability was pretty much as good as it ever was(became a bit more skilled and mature once Phil took over, though slightly less athletic)

3peat is self explanatory. I loved his play in '98, he dominated Seattle in every facet of the game to the point George Karl and Bob Weiss were calling him the best big man ever. Then vs Utah after a poor game 1 when it was a huge blowout, he was in dominant form the next 3 games, and kept playing until the final buzzer even when the rest of his team had crumbled and appeared to have quit. Ultimately, the highest I can give him is a 9 though because he failed to win with the most talented team in the league, and at least some of that seemed to be due to his leadership being inferior to the 3peat.

I took some points away for injuries and poor playoff performances by his standard. If you have any questions about my rankings for particular years, feel free to ask.
