In normal basketball rules yes, with some exceptions (has to hit the rim, counts as fgm/fga & offensive rebound).
In the NBA its legal, under the traveling rule a player who attempts a shot or pass may not be the first to touch the ball unless it touches the backboard, rim or another player. Therefore, a player can intentionally pass the ball to himself off the backboard or rim. (it doesnt give you a rebound/assist or missed fga if its of the backboard, not sure about the rim though)....

Section XIV Travelling.
i. A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player.
I see you failed to comprehend what you just posted. Let me make this clearer to you.
A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player.
As you can see, it touched the backboard. It isn't traveling.

I quoted the NBA's website. You quote some who-knows-what ? No thanks.
Also, the rim is not the backboard as the NBA rule clearly states.
Hey it was an awesome idea, very creative. It's not my fault the refs don't know their own rulebook.

"For the NBA, according to this Q&A (from 2009) with Bernie Fryer (Vice President of Referee Operations and Director of Officials in the NBA), it is also allowed:
Are you allowed to throw the ball off the backboard, grab your own rebound and dunk it without landing? -- Blaise Bernie's answer: Yes. Under the traveling rule, a player who attempts a shot or pass may not be the first to touch the ball unless it touches the backboard, rim or another player. Therefore, a player can intentionally pass the ball to himself off the backboard or rim."
Get it?
