Nah. Read up on players in practice. Scrubs can play stars to a standstill one on one. Especially with a size advantage. Scott Burrell lost to Jordan 7-6 once after Ron Harper(the ref) called Scott for a travel on game point and gave it back to MJ who won.

Yao was giving guys near his size the business in the post. What is Kobe gonna do if its make it take it and Yao scores first? Blocking a shot in a game doesnt mean hes gonna do it one on one. Muggsy blocked Ewing in a game. Nate got Shaq and Yao. wouldnt help one on one.

There is a reason when the NBA did a one on one competition in the 70s Bob Lanier won and not a guard.

How many of those things do u see possible in a 1vs1, seeing how they were mostly help defence by kobe and late rotation by Yao, maybe that second to last one where they Yao with 5 fouls already..

I get it. Size matters a lot. Considering the kind of caliber player Yao was too, he'd probably give Kobe a good fight. But I'd still give an edge to Kobe even if it's a 1v1. I can see Kobe using his savvy and strength on defense to strip the ball away from Yao.

But ... this is assuming they start at top of the key. Kobe would do everything to stop him from getting closer to the basket. And let's be real Yao was mobile for his size but still slow as **** compare to great guards like Kobe that Kobe was able to dunk over him, block him, layups around him during their careers.

If they start the game getting ball from the post, I'd say Yao wins like 7 out of 10 times or even more. But that ain't a real 1v1 that's a post-up game practice drill where you practice shots at the spots you want to be at.

Yao wouldnt need to get that close to the basket.....not that he couldnt. He spent his entire life playing guys half his size and learning not to get stripped. Hes not gonna just get the ball taken away often one on one because it happens in games with 5 defenders on the floor.

All time great wings get beaten or played to a standstill by all manner of bigmen. Bill Walton and Bird used to play in Boston and Walton had been injured and washed up for like 7 years when he got there. He beat Bird at times....but Bird beat him too.

The size is the equalizer. And yao had too much of it.

All Yao has to do is back Kobe down to get to the spot he wants, then use his body to create some space, and take a nice short j, a hook over either shoulder, or just lay it in after Kobe inevitably is forced to gamble/overextend for a steal/strip. All of these shots are far higher percentage than any shots Kobe will get from the perimeter. Yao can just back off a bit and wait for Kobe to miss. Kobe would actually have to take the ball away from Yao. Consistently.

This truly is simply a percentages game, and Yao has huge advantages. Kobe may take a game or two if they played ten times and Kobe got hot, but otherwise Yao wins easily. Some people here are acting like Yao hasn't spent his whole life backing down smaller players, and seem to be forgetting that he had a nice face up game within 15 feet, great hands, and good footwork.

A more interesting matchup would be Kobe vs someone like Greg Ostertag. Greg has a huge size advantage, but he has no jumper, no footwork, and awful hands (even at 7'2, he couldn't palm a basketball). That would be more of a size vs skill matchup. Yao vs Kobe is a size and skills vs skills matchup

Have you guys seen those 1 on 1 challenges that Scalabrine did in the Boston area? Admittedly, they pit (former) NBA talent against non-NBA talent, but it provides a fairly decent picture of what every NBA big would do in a 1 on 1 situation. You just can't consistently stop size if you yourself don't have it. And Kobe wouldn't have it here.

And Yao wasn't your garden variety big man. He was a multiple All Star and always one of the 3 best centers in the league when healthy.
