Rajon Rondo vs Jason Kidd

In 01, 03 and 04, Kidd was 8th and 9th in MVP voting. 1st and 2nd All-D.

Are those versions of players close? Both seems to be good defensive PGs who doesn't shoot well in their primes.

Kidd was better Rondo kinda slipped in the rankings because the league didn't have options. Kidd on the other hand was in the same boat as Miller and Ewing where he was competing with to many options.

Neither of them was a great shooter but during his peak, Kidd could be relied upon to shoot like 80% FT, 33% 3PT, and 40% from the mid-range. Rondo never came close to those numbers. He had a few early seasons where his mid-range shot was nice but he never approached the volume of shots that Jason was putting up.

I'm not sure there's anything that Rajon did better. Shooting, scoring, rebounding, defense, transition play, leadership, intangibles - it's all in Kidd's favor. They were both great passers but Rondo wasn't a big enough scoring threat to warp the defense. Jason was up around 18-20 ppg in his best years with better-than-you'd-expect efficiency. Like 19.8 ppg on 50% TS (97 TS+) over 40 playoff games in 2002 and 2003.

Kidd was an MVP-level player at his best while Rondo was more of a middle-of-the-pack All-star.

I think Kidd was always significantly better.

Give Kidd the team Rondo had and it's a 3-peat.

Give Rondo the team Kidd had and they don't make the finals.

Kidd was just much more versatile, namely a great rebounder and a defender that could guard bigger opponents. He was also better at running the floor.

Rondo might be better at swiping at the ball and getting steals. Flashier for sure.

Overall, it's not close. Jason Kidd is closer to Magic Johnson than Rondo is to Kidd. To me Jason Kidd is an all time great, one of the best to ever play, a very unique point guard, a true basketball mind, who could see the play develop, like a chess player.

Rondo was the Kidd junior. Like comparing Kobe to Mike, both great players but one slightly better. Kidd could carry a team farther by himself for sure though.
