I guess the main purpose is to get the shot off over a closing defender, Ive always felt you get more accuracy shooting if youre as close to the ground as possible. More stable base. Steph Ive noticed uses very little lift when he shoots, altho Ray Allen liked to get a good spring and release at the peak of his jump. TMac would always jump super high and shoot while hanging in the air, but it just seems like such unnecessary stress on the knees.

Yea I feel you, but a heavyweight like Larry Johnson jumping that high to shoot is crazy to me.

I mean it IS called a jumper. Back in the earlier days you had the random set shot people and big guys taking shots who didn't need to jump. But all guys under a certain height had to literally jump whenever they shot...
If you can learn to orient yourself in the air it's much easier than not jumping. Closer to the basket
