From a marketing perspective anti hero ball is bad for the NBA
and is exposing the lack of true star power in todays league with KD & Kobe missing the playoffs
"Hero ball" is what the casual fan wants to see, casual fan interest is what determines the overall popularity of the NBA
Here are the top 5 NBA finals which drew the largest TV rating all time
87, 96, 97, 93 & 98.
Not surprisingly 4 of the top 5 all featured narratives focused on individual players
96 - Jordan's return to the finals, 97 - Jordan vs Malone, 98 - Jordan's last dance, 93 - Jordan vs Chuck (two of the biggest "me" players of all time)
team ball does not sell, the 2007 Cavs vs Spurs finals was the lowest rated finals of all time...
as this graph shows, Jordan's "hero ball" did wonders for the NBA's viewership... but the story of "hero ball" vs team ball is really demonstrated by the 2000's..
the 2001 finals was the highest rated NBA finals of the Lakers 3peat and the highest rated NBA finals since Jordan and it just so happens to coincide with Kobe's "hero ball" and dominant run through the WC playoffs..
and as you can see, the ratings just fucking plummeted in 2003 when the boring ass Spurs and Nets were featured and then immediately sky rockets in 04 when Kobe and the Lakers were featured..
then the ratings plummet again in 05 when the Spurs and Pistons, two of the best examples "team ball" we have had this era..
this pattern continues, ratings drop when "team ball" makes the finals and ratings go up when "hero ball" aka Kobe & Jordan are in the finals,
2014 was the lowest rated finas in 5 years and featured Lebron going for the 3peat and the Spurs playing beautiful basketball.. but nobody cared..
the NBA needs guys like Durant and WB in the playoffs, it sells.

Spurs not making the finals would be a breath of fresh air

Also, OP equates hero ball with star power. Not necessarily true.
Celtics, Heat, Mavs, these teams all played team ball AND had stars. Popular star players like Bran, KG, Dirk are not hero ball chuckers like kobe, melo, westbrook, but still are stars.
Also, Lakers have a huge fanbase across the country and play in the 2nd largest market. Of course their ratings will be higher.
OP drawing shit conclusions as usual.

You're correct in saying that Bran isn't a hero ball player, which would explain why he was involved in the lowest rated NBA finals of all time..
Heat, Mavs all failed to draw as high as the Kobe led Lakers..
2001 finals highest rated finals since Jordan and was AI vs Kobe.. MVP AI vs Kobe who was on an absolute tear through the playoffs
Kobe and Jordan drew big numbers because they were exciting superstars who played a certain style, meanwhile Lebron and Duncan two guys who are consistently praised for playing the game the "correct way" can't draw peoples interest for shit
as evident by the fact that they have pulled in some of the lowest TV numbers in NBA history

How come 11-14 drew higher ratings than 08 and 09?

Are you sure it's hero ball and not because Jordan & LA Lakers are massively popular? I mean, John Lucas III can play hero ball but I doubt people would tune in for him.

the NBA's popularity dropped after 2004, as you can see by the finals ratings during 05-07 due to teams like Spurs and Pistons.
There was work that needed to be done in order to build popularity up
Kobe's return to the finals popped the biggest rating since 04, and eventually built up the league's popularity to the point where he drew a bigger finals rating than 11, 12, 13 & 14.
In fact the number begin dropping in 2013 and 2014.. after the initial excitement of the big 3 is over (2011) and the next great gunners (WB & KD) people began not to care..
the highest rated finals of the 2000's have all centered around Kobe, while the lowest rated finals have centered around the boring ass Spurs.
the lowest rated finals of the last 5 years featured Lebron James going for a 3peat and the Spurs playing beautiful basketball..and nobody cared..

if he could do it at the level of Kobe and Jordan then yes..
and the LA Lakers being massively popular being the reason for high ratings begins isn't an excuse..
if so then why the huge discrepancy between the 2000, 2001 & 2002 finals?
01 featured hero ball Iverson vs Kobe who was looking like MJ reincarnated going into the finals..
and people tuned in for that in droves.. and then tuned back out (to an extent) when the Lakers played the Nets the very next year
Iverson's hero ball was a huge reason for the 01 finals rating

And it was still higher than 08 and 09, both featuring Kobe and one of them being the whole Lakers/Celtics angle they pushed so hard.

not it wasn't.. get your facts straight
and none of those HEAT finals pulled in higher ratings than the 2010 finals (Kobe goes for 2 w/o Shaq), 2004 finals ( Kobe & Shaq) or 2001 finals (Iverson vs Kobe)
the highest rated finals of the 2000's were 2010, 01 and 04
the lowest rated finals were 03, 05 and 07.
people are more interested in watching hero ball than watching team ball.
