it's not a stretch of a proposition. the valuation of ayton is ultimately determined by their front office. do they think he had a bad season because he was playing for a coach that did not like him? it's public knowledge now that monty and ayton were at odds. and monty lost the locker room since last year. so, do the blazers think he can get back to form under the right coaching/leadership? if they convince themselves of that, then all of a sudden he's a 20/10 guy that damian can really use. and a future 1st makes the offer more enticing, plus he's locked up for a couple more years.

This roster won 53 games and went to the conference finals. That’s probably enough to make him feel like he isn’t wasting his life. Most of these trades gets at least similar talent.

Only reason they made the conference finals is due to the draw. They got swept by a team that missing some of its best players, the Rockets and Warriors were the clear cut best two teams in the league that season.
