football awards are far worse than NBA ones and i think its cause storylines/narratives are easier to craft with the different leagues and "special" competitions like the world cup and other cups, which make weighing the events a little tougher and lead to sensationalized and over-romanticized takes that arent taking a whole season into account anymore.


for example messi getting the ballon dor last year is easily worse than any MVP in NBA history. like not even close. itd be like booker or butler getting the MVP this season due to their round 1.

I'd think it's like the Davor Suker situation in '98. We would have a watch party and discuss this guy quite often in front of moms and aunties. Clearly they have seen/heard about him yet a couple of months afterwards no one would recall ever hearing the name.
