There's some disrespect but a lot of it is the declining quality of sports discourse due to social media. You don't have to watch games or even pay attention to the sport to formulate an opinion on athlete anymore. All a player needs is to make one gaffe or mistake, and that faux pas will define the rest of his career. This is due to the idiocy of the fanbases consuming anything without question. JR Smith had to go back to college and get As just shed some of the Hennessy-drinking jester persona that followed him throughout his career. Wilt, MJ and others had the luxury of avoiding the 24 hour meme machine that subjects today's players to a level of scrutiny unheard of in the 90s and prior. The audience is more interesting in interjecting with their own opinions and 'hot takes' rather than enjoy and admire the accomplishments of one of the game's greatest players playing today. These 'sports fans' have declining attention spans, which once again is a sign of declining intelligence.
