Default Don't put off looking for old friends

This past week I got some really terrible news.

One of my favourite people growing up was a kid named Cody, he sat next to me in grade five. We became friends when he saw me pull out the same The Death of Superman book during reading time and handed me his Heir to the Empire novel saying "You look like you need something new". I think of him everytime I see Star Wars merchandise.

The next two years were a bonding over Skate boarding , pop punk and Star Wars movies, he moved away in the 8th grade. A lot of people I knew were lucky enough to go to high school with him and have asked me over the years if I've seen him.

Last week I found my old lunchbox and it's covered in cool band stickers from NYC that I got from Cody.

Well, a mutual friend just let me know that he's dead.

It's the second time in my life where I stalled on contacting or reaching out to an old friend, the last time I just choked on the voice mail message, only to have this person I shared my childhood with die.

If you have a chance to look up an old friend and an interest, please do it.

    Sorry for your loss.

It's hard to message someone you knew 15yrs ago out of the blue. I don't even know what you say. 'Hello' out of the left field?? I get anxious even messaging someone I talked with a month ago, now 15 years??

they're just as anxious and caught up in their own thoughts to even notice any quirk of yours. in other words, you wouldn't care so much about what people think about you if you knew how little they did.

In all in seriousness though, what kind of relationship were you going to have with this person. You were last friends with them in middle school, when you were literally still kids. Truth be told, there’s a reason you didn’t reach out to them, you felt funny contacting someone you haven’t spoken to in, I’m assuming, 15-20 years. I’d honestly be kinda weirded out if a middle school friend I haven’t talked to in 15-20 years called me out of the blue

I understand you feel regret now because he’s dead, but what would’ve probably happened is you would’ve had an awkward 10 minute conversation with them before very likely never speaking with them again.

I think you're completely missing the point to have a good friend for 3 years then realize they aren't there anymore to talk to. Maybe we wouldn't have much in common or to talk about.I'm sure if I got my head outta my ass, my call would have meant something to them. It's true you will only have soo many close friends in life but if you ride the break and don't treat someone besides yourself special it will be a lonely and meaningless life for you.
